Controls

In the Shock Mitigation Directory this category is separated into sub-categories of Gear Shifters & Throttles, Trim Control Systems and Steering Wheels.

Gear Shift Controls

One gear shift control lever is required for each inboard or outboard engine. The gear shift has three defined positions neutral (out of gear), forward and reverse.

Many outboard motors use a combined gear shift and throttle lever. The command from lever to engine can be by cable or electronically, which is also known as fly by wire.

Engine Throttle Controls

One throttle control lever is usually required for each inboard or outboard engine. The throttle control can be pushed forward to increase the speed of the boat.

On multiple engine installations each throttle can be moved independently. When one lever is pushed forward or ‘throttled up’ the other outboards do not change revs.

Trim Controls

Trim buttons control hydraulics that change the angle of propeller thrust on outboard motors and inboard / outdrive installations. Outboards can be 'tilted up' out of the water.

Trim tabs or interceptors are independent units on the transom of a craft. Buttons control the hydraulics which raise and lower trim tabs to improve sea keeping and performance.

Gear Shifters & Throttles

One gear shift control lever and one throttle control lever is usually required for each inboard or outboard engine. The command from lever to engine can be sent by cable or electronically. Many outboard motors use a combined gear shift and throttle lever.
