Patrol Craft Characteristics
Patrol craft can be designed for use in Riverine and Estuary (brown water), Coastal (green water) or Offshore (blue water) environments.
Riverine patrol craft are usually shallow draught and may be used for personnel and equipment transport, landing craft roles, tactical support and high speed assault.
Patrol Craft Roles
Patrol boats are usually operated by a navy, coast guard or police forces. Small size and relatively low cost make them one of the most common types of warship in the world.
Fast patrol boats are used by government agencies involved in maritime and port surveillance, coastal and offshore surveillance and law enforcement missions.
Offshore Patrol Craft
Offshore patrol craft are typically around 30 metre (100 feet) in length. Top speeds for modern designs of offshore patrol craft can exceed 30 knots.
Besides coastal defence duties these craft can carry out various border protection roles including anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, fisheries patrols, immigration and law enforcement.

Riverine Patrol Craft
Riverine craft are used for patrolling large rivers, waterways, canals, reservoirs, dams, deltas and estuaries. Riverine patrol craft are usually shallow draught and may be used for personnel and equipment transport, landing craft roles, tactical support and high speed assault.

Coastal patrol craft are used for various operations around harbours, docks, estauaries and coastlines. Fast patrol boats are used by government agencies involved in maritime and port surveillance, coastal and offshore surveillance and law enforcement missions. They may also be used for border protection, inshore petro-chemical security plus search & rescue operations.

Offshore Patrol Craft
Offshore patrol craft are often used for coastal defence duties, border protection and multiple task patrolling in all weathers. Offshore patrol vessels are used by government agencies involved in maritime and coastal surveillance and law enforcement missions. Duties may include police, customs, anti-piracy, immigration, anti-smuggling and fisheries protection. These vessels may also assist in search and rescue (S & R) operations.
