Inflatable Boats

In the Shock Mitigation Directory this category is separated into sub-categories based on type of use and overall boat length.

Inflatable Boat Characteristics

The main feature of an Inflatable Boat is lightweight, durable construction. The sides and bow are flexible tubes containing air. The transom is rigid for mounting a motor

On smaller boats the floor is often flexible to keep weight to the minimum. On boats over 3 metres (10 feet) the floor can be made of 3 to 5 rigid plywood or aluminium sheets

Professional Inflatable Boats

Inflatables are usually powered by a single gasoline or petrol outboard engine. Inflatables have many roles in the military and commercial sector as personnel and load carriers

These craft make excellent dive boats and can be used in shallow water. They are usually run at low to medium speeds. In flat sea conditions speeds can exceed 30 knots

Air Filled Tubes

The Inflatable tube may be made of Hypalon, PVC or Polyethylene. This tube has multiple air chambers each fitted with separate fill and relief valves

The air filled tube makes the inflatable boat extremely versatile by providing high stability, a softer ride at sea and the ability to fender off vessels without damage

Science & Tour Inflatables

12 feet: 3.5 metre        15 feet: 4.6 metre        18 feet: 5.5 metre

21 feet: 6.4 metre        24 feet: 7.3 metre        27 feet: 8.2 metre

Inflatable boats are relatively light to transport and are easily launched and recovered from all sizes of vessels. Inflatable boats can be transported inflated or deflated and can be used in most environments from ice surveys to the tropics. Inflatables are used for scientific studies, environmental research and diving support. Inflatable boats are launched from cruise ships for eco tourism, beach landing plus observation of marine mammals and wildlife.

Multi Purpose Inflatables

3.5 metre: 11 feet 6”            4 metre: 13 feet 1”             4.5 metre: 14 feet 9”

5 metre: 16 feet 5”                5.5 metre: 18 feet               6 metre: 19 feet 7”

6.5 metre: 21 feet 3”            7 metre: 23 feet                   7.5 metre: 24 feet 6”

8 metre: 26 feet 2”

Inflatable boats are relatively light to transport and are easily launched and recovered from all sizes of vessels. Inflatable boats can be transported inflated or deflated and can be used in most environments. Inflatable boats are easily launched from river banks, beaches or larger craft. With the correct crew training  heavy duty professional inflatables can also be used for beach patrol, beach rescue, white water support, river rescue, swift water rescue, inland flood relief, fire department and first responder roles.

Military & Dive Inflatables

12 feet: 3.5 metre        15 feet: 4.6 metre        18 feet: 5.5 metre

21 feet: 6.4 metre        24 feet: 7.3 metre        27 feet: 8.2 metre

Military and dive inflatable boats are relatively light to transport and easily launched from river banks or beaches. Inflatable boats can be transported inflated or deflated and can be launched from larger craft or air dropped. Inflatable boats are selected for diving operations as they provide a low stable platform which assists divers to enter and exit the water. Inflatables are used by the military for surf training, beach landings and special forces insertion. Army engineers use inflatable boats for crossing rivers, estuaries and wetlands.
